AGO vs ROM vs Bata Shoe Museum: Fall 2026 Exhibitions Compared

Compare what's on this fall at the AGO, ROM and Bata Shoe Museum, from Kusama's mirrored room to Psychedelics and beaded footwear, plus how to pick.

AGO vs ROM vs Bata Shoe Museum: Fall 2026 Exhibitions Compared Culture

Fall is a strong season for Toronto museum-going, and three institutions are worth comparing: the Art Gallery of Ontario on Dundas Street West, the Royal Ontario Museum on Bloor Street, and the Bata Shoe Museum nearby. Each offers a very different kind of afternoon.

Art Gallery of Ontario: the big-name art pick

The AGO's exhibitions page lists the most to see. The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse from the Dallas Museum of Art runs until October 18, 2026, and Yayoi Kusama's INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM - LET'S SURVIVE FOREVER runs until October 25. Longer-running shows include Sunday Best: The Power & The Glory of Black Style (until February 28, 2027), Ranbir Sidhu: No Limits (until January 3, 2027) and Melissa Auf der Maur: My '90s Rock Photographs (until June 6, 2027). In Plain Sight: Highlights from the AGO's Collection of Historic Picture Frames opens October 17, and Danh Vo: Ships passing in the night opens November 28. The AGO is at 317 Dundas Street West; check visit.ago.ca for hours and tickets.

Royal Ontario Museum: the science-and-culture pick

Afar's fall arts guide highlights the ROM's Psychedelics: Art. Culture. Science., on view through December 6, 2026. The museum is also across from the Gardiner Museum, making the Bloor Street area easy to combine into one outing.

Bata Shoe Museum: the compact, quirky pick

The Bata's own exhibitions page lists Unearthing Vindolanda: Footwear from the Edge of the Roman Empire, André Perugia: A Design Legend Unveiled and All About Shoes: Footwear Through the Ages as current, with Brilliant: The Art of Beaded Footwear Around the World opening October 22. It is the smallest of the three and the easiest to finish in an hour or two.

How to choose

Pick the AGO if you want a headline show, especially the Kusama room or the Impressionist exhibition, both of which end this month, so go soon. Choose the ROM for a broader mix of art, culture and science. Choose the Bata for a short, focused visit or when you want something offbeat. If you have a day, pair the ROM with the Gardiner or the Bata. Exhibition dates change, so confirm on each museum's site before you go.
